Personnel

Principal Investigator

Patrick J. O'Connor , Ph.D., principal investigator, has been conducting research on exercise and women's health since 1987. He has been a professor in the Department of Exercise Science at the University of Georgia since 1992. Dr. O'Connor is a member of the American Pain Society and a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. O'Connor can be reached by email ( poconnor@coe.uga.edu ) or phone (706-542-4382).


Co-Investigator

James F. Clapp, III , M.D., co-investigator, is an internationally recognized authority on the effects of maternal recreational physical activity on the course and outcome of pregnancy.  Dr. Clapp is Emeritus Professor of Reproductive Biology at Case Western Reserve University and Research Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Vermont College of Medicine.

M. Elaine Cress , Ph.D., co-investigator, is the Director of the Aging and Physical Performance Laboratory at the University of Georgia where she has been a professor since 1998. She is an internationally recongnized expert on the assessment of physical function, especially among older adults. Dr. Cress is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.

Robert W. Motl , Ph.D., co-investigator, is an assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Dr. Motl is a statistical consultant to the project.




Co-Investigator

Melanie S. Poudevigne , Ph.D., co-investigator, is an Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator in Health & Fitness Management at Clayton College and State University. Her dissertation, earned at the University of Georgia , focused on physical activity and mood among pregnant women.



 

Project Director

Tameka R. Gude , M.P.A., is the project director. She is responsible for recruiting participants into the study and conducting monthly tests of back pain, function and quality of life. Tameka is also the Executive Director of a non-profit organization located in Monticello , Georgia - The Marvin L. Gude Young Achievers' Academy, Inc. Consultant

Thomas W. Goggin , M.D., consultant is in private practice in obstetrics and gynecology in Athens , Georgia . Dr. Goggin received his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. He is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.



Consultant

Lisa Stone , consultant, is the Founder and President of Fit For 2, Inc. Ms. Stone is a graduate of UCLA and is a fitness instructor certified by the American Council on Exercise (ACE). She is one of only 75 instructors worldwide who holds a specialty certificate in pre- and post-natal fitness. She has trained instructors in pre- and post-natal fitness and has taught numerous aerobics classes for pregnant and non-pregnant women throughout her 20+ year fitness career.
