Instructional Design Activity: Formative Evaluation

Overall Instructor Rating: Satisfactory

Ratings explanation:

  • Exemplary - A model answer in almost every way (this is given out very rarely).
  • Satisfactory - Very well done; you've met the expectations of the assignment. There are some minor problems, so read my feedback well.
  • Marginal Pass - You pass, but there are lots of issues to consider. Read my feedback very carefully and be sure you understand the points/issues I raise.
  • Not satisfactory, redo and resubmit - The assignment was not completed appropriately. I am concerned that you do not understand the process well enough yet. To get credit for the assignment, you need to redo it, most probably on another topic. Read and consider my feedback very carefully before redoing.

Instructor's Overall Feedback:

(Feedback given by Younghee Woo; concurred by Lloyd Rieber.)

This looks very good. I felt everything was very well designed.

The objective of this activity is to plan for the formative evaluation of your instruction. As stated by Dick, Carey, and Carey (2001): "Formative evaluation is the process designers use to obtain data that can be used to revise their instruction to make it more efficient and effective. The emphasis in formative evlauation is on the collection and analysis of data and the revision of the instruction" (p. 284-285).

Using the lesson you have described in the IDA on lesson design, complete the Formative Evaluation Planning Worksheet. Using the table below, describe:

  • Who will do the ongoing evaluation;
  • What is being evaluated;
  • When the evaluation should occur; and
  • How the evaluation will be conducted (i.e. tools you will use)

Be sure to refer to Dick, Carey, and Carey Chapter 10 for specific information that can be gathered from experts (e.g. subject-matter, learning, and learner) and learners in different formative evaluation situations (e.g. one-to-one, small-group, and field trials).

Formative Evaluation Planning Worksheet

Write the instructional objectives of your lesson here (it can be more than one):

Your final response:

Students will be able to generate a resume for use in a business setting using proper formatting and inclusion of relevant information.

The instructor's feedback to this step:

Looks good.

Write your objective using the correct form. Click here for advice on writing objectives.

HTML formatting reminder: You can embed HTML tags directly in your responses. This will be help your buddies and the instructor view your information in a more readable fashion. For example, if you want a paragraph break somewhere, just enter <p>:

I will have the experts review the lesson on three levels:
<p>
1. content; 2. technical accuracy; 3. quality of instruction.
<p>
The content review will help ensure that no mistakes were made in the information provided to the learners.

How
Experts (subject-matter, learning, learner)

Your final response:

I will have the experts review the lesson on 4 levels:

1. content 2. technical accuracy 3. quality of instruction 4. relevance to the learner's needs

The content review will ensure that no mistakes were made in the information given. The technical accuracy review will ensure that all of the files, links, and other technical aspects are working correctly and to their full potential. The quality of instruction review will ensure that the format and flow of the lesson will be most conducive to learning for the students. Finally, the relevance to learner's needs review will ensure that the lesson meets the pre-established needs of the learners in the best way possible

Your final response:

This will occur prior to the implemenation to the students and will occur within a time frame that will allow adequate time for necessary changes before implementation.

Your final response:

Interviews will occur with each expert to determine their thoughts on the project. The experts will take notes while reviewing the lesson for their assigned criteria, and they will in turn share this information with the lesson designers.

The instructor's feedback to this step:

This looks very good, but I recommend that you make clear who are experts for reviewing the content, technical accuracy, and quality of instruction. You might need different experts for each part.

Learners: one-to-one

Your final response:

2 sample learners will be utilized to evaluate the ability of the lesson to enable students to generate a functional resume.

One of the students will be a novice at resume writing and the other will be a learner who is more experienced and knowledgable about resumes.

Your final response:

This will occur after the lesson has been developed but before implementation on a large scale.

Your final response:

The sample learners will sit down with the lesson designer and go through the entire lesson. After this, the learner will rate the lesson on a scale of one to five in four categories:

1 Creativity

2 Relevance to the audience

3 Overall style

4 Usefulness of material in preparing students for the real world

The instructor's feedback to this step:

Excellent! Very well designed.

Learners: small-group

Your final response:

The small group will be used to evaluate the ability of the lesson to enable students to perform the desired task. The group will consist of 4-6 students who represent the demographics of the class.

Your final response:

This will occur after the lesson has been developed but before implementation on a large scale.

Your final response:

Each member of the group will be asked to fill out a survey on the lesson in which they will rate and comment about the lesson using a one to five scale for each of four categories:

1 Creativity

2 Relevance to the audience

3 Overall style

4 Usefulness of material in preparing students for the real world

The instructor's feedback to this step:

You did a good job here. You seem to understand the small-group evaluation process well.

Learners: field trial

Your final response:

The learners in the field trial will actually be utilizing the lesson in a class setting in an attempt to enable themselves to accomplish the goal set forth for them.

Your final response:

This is the implementation stage and the evaluation of the field trial will occur after implementation of the actual lesson in this classroom setting.

Your final response:

The students will be required to make a resume using the information that they have been given. In turn, these resumes will be graded using criteria such as format, relevance of information, and creativity. These resumes will in large part show whether or not the lesson was worthwhile.

In addition, the students will be asked to write a post-lesson reflection in which they will state whether or not they found the lesson to be helpful and what they feel could be improved upon.

The instructor's feedback to this step:

Excellent! Very well designed.
