Instructional Design Activity: Formative Evaluation

Overall Instructor Rating: Exemplary

Ratings explanation:

  • Exemplary - A model answer in almost every way (this is given out very rarely).
  • Satisfactory - Very well done; you've met the expectations of the assignment. There are some minor problems, so read my feedback well.
  • Marginal Pass - You pass, but there are lots of issues to consider. Read my feedback very carefully and be sure you understand the points/issues I raise.
  • Not satisfactory, redo and resubmit - The assignment was not completed appropriately. I am concerned that you do not understand the process well enough yet. To get credit for the assignment, you need to redo it, most probably on another topic. Read and consider my feedback very carefully before redoing.

Instructor's Overall Feedback:

An excellent Formative Analysis IDA! although I'm going to point out just a couple of things I think you should modify, they will not prevent me from giving you an "exemplary" rating. You have done a thorough job, giving thoughtful detail to each step, and shown that you "get it" as to what formative evaluation is all about. Her are my two criticisms: 1) Objectives - For your second lesson objective, just remember that what is being "generated" is not simply the list but the search procedure itself (as you and I discussed one day). So I would suggest wording like the following: "SWBAT generate an author search resulting in a list of titles written by a specific author." For your third objective, I don't know what this is. Demonstrate the connection? What do you want the student to do here? This is probably an "identify" skill. 2) In the How portion of your field trial section, you mention pre-lesson assessments but don't identify what kind of assessments you mean. Are these multiple-choice quizzes? Or what? That's it. I'll admit that I think the above items are pretty important. But ... overall, an exemplary IDA! Greg

The objective of this activity is to plan for the formative evaluation of your instruction. As stated by Dick, Carey, and Carey (2001): "Formative evaluation is the process designers use to obtain data that can be used to revise their instruction to make it more efficient and effective. The emphasis in formative evlauation is on the collection and analysis of data and the revision of the instruction" (p. 284-285).

Using the lesson you have described in the IDA on lesson design, complete the Formative Evaluation Planning Worksheet. Using the table below, describe:

  • Who will do the ongoing evaluation;
  • What is being evaluated;
  • When the evaluation should occur; and
  • How the evaluation will be conducted (i.e. tools you will use)

Be sure to refer to Dick, Carey, and Carey Chapter 10 for specific information that can be gathered from experts (e.g. subject-matter, learning, and learner) and learners in different formative evaluation situations (e.g. one-to-one, small-group, and field trials).

Write the instructional objectives of your lesson here (it can be more than one):

Your final response:

Unit 3 The Basic Search LESSON 1 SWBAT identify media center materials by using the OPAC's Author search function. SWBAT generate a list of titles written by a specific author. SWBAT demonstrate the connection between the catalog search/identifying materials and independently locating said materials in the media center.

HTML formatting reminder: You can embed HTML tags directly in your responses. This will be help your buddies and the instructor view your information in a more readable fashion. For example, if you want a paragraph break somewhere, just enter <p>:

I will have the experts review the lesson on three levels:
<p>
1. content; 2. technical accuracy; 3. quality of instruction.

The content review will help ensure that no mistakes were made in the information provided to the learners.

Your final response:

The lesson and handouts will be reviewed by: a)The person in Ed Media responsible for supporting the SLMS in the use of the Destiny Catalog for content and technical accuracy. b)The school's Assistant Principal for Instruction for quality of instruction and organizational effectiveness. c)Another elementary school media specialist for content, technical accuracy and quality of instruction.

Your final response:

To allow for sufficient turn around time, the expert evaluations will take place two weeks prior to scheduled one-to-one instruction.

Learners: one-to-one

Your final response:

One sample, average, learner from Ms B's 4th grade class, average learner meaning neither at the top nor bottom of Ms. B's class, who will evaluate how well and how quickly the instruction can be learned. Evaluating how quickly the instruction can be learned is important because instruction is limited to 30 minutes.

The evaluation will occur three days prior to the small-group evaluation to allow adequate time for modifications or revisions to the instruction.

Data will be gathered using the tools of: a) teacher observations of student behavior while working b) teacher observation of the time it takes the student to complete the self-paced work sheet c) completed self-paced work sheet d) follow up questioning of student

Learners: small-group

Your final response:

As with one-to-one evaluation,the small group of four learners will evaluate how well and how quickly instruction can be learned. The small group will be comprised students from Ms. B's 4th grade class: one average learner, one from the bottom 3rd of the class and a learner pair made up of an ESOL student and a student from the top third.

Your final response:

Small group evaluation will take place three school days after the one-to-one evaluation and at least three school days prior to the field trial in order to allow time for modifications and revisions based on the small-group members' feedback.

Learners: field trial

Your final response:

Learners in the field test will be the actual learners who will be using the instruction, i.e., students from one 5th grade class and students from one 3rd grade class. They will be testing the learnability of the instruction for the grade range the instruction is targeted (learners in grade 3 through 5).

Your final response:

Field test will occur after the small-group identified modifications to instruction have been completed and during the scheduled library segment for each grade level class of evaluators.
