Instructional Design Activity: Formative Evaluation

Overall Instructor Rating: Satisfactory

Ratings explanation:

  • Exemplary - A model answer in almost every way (this is given out very rarely).
  • Satisfactory - Very well done; you've met the expectations of the assignment. There are some minor problems, so read my feedback well.
  • Marginal Pass - You pass, but there are lots of issues to consider. Read my feedback very carefully and be sure you understand the points/issues I raise.
  • Not satisfactory, redo and resubmit - The assignment was not completed appropriately. I am concerned that you do not understand the process well enough yet. To get credit for the assignment, you need to redo it, most probably on another topic. Read and consider my feedback very carefully before redoing.

Instructor's Overall Feedback:

You did a good job here. You seem to understand the process very well.

The objective of this activity is to plan for the formative evaluation of your instruction. As stated by Dick, Carey, and Carey (2001): "Formative evaluation is the process designers use to obtain data that can be used to revise their instruction to make it more efficient and effective. The emphasis in formative evlauation is on the collection and analysis of data and the revision of the instruction" (p. 284-285).

Using the lesson you have described in the IDA on lesson design, complete the Formative Evaluation Planning Worksheet. Using the table below, describe:

  • Who will do the ongoing evaluation;
  • What is being evaluated;
  • When the evaluation should occur; and
  • How the evaluation will be conducted (i.e. tools you will use)

Be sure to refer to Dick, Carey, and Carey Chapter 10 for specific information that can be gathered from experts (e.g. subject-matter, learning, and learner) and learners in different formative evaluation situations (e.g. one-to-one, small-group, and field trials).

Formative Evaluation Planning Worksheet

Write the instructional objectives of your lesson here (it can be more than one):

Your final response:

SWBAT identify the appropriate intervals of a major scale. Coneptual Objective: A scale is a series of intervals in a specific order which lay the foundation for all music.

The instructor's feedback to this step:

This has all the elements of a well written objective. Nice Job.

Write your objective using the correct form. Click here for advice on writing objectives.

HTML formatting reminder: You can embed HTML tags directly in your responses. This will be help your buddies and the instructor view your information in a more readable fashion. For example, if you want a paragraph break somewhere, just enter <p>:

I will have the experts review the lesson on three levels:
<p>
1. content; 2. technical accuracy; 3. quality of instruction.
<p>
The content review will help ensure that no mistakes were made in the information provided to the learners.

How
Experts (subject-matter, learning, learner)

Your final response:

1. Content 2. Technical Acuuracy 3. Quality of Instruction Three experts will evaluate the content, technical accuracy, and quality of the instruction. They will be other orchestra directors from the Atlanta area.

Your final response:

1, 2, 3- 3 weeks prior to the field test. The experts evaluating this lesson will be other orchestra teachers in the metro atlanta area.

Your final response:

A written lesson plan will be given to the 3 experts. They will evaulate the content- is it age appropriate, is the objective met? The Technical Accuracy- is the information presented correct- meaning no mistakes in the verbal information part. Quality of Instruction: is the instructor using widely recognized teaching techniques? Are these techniques appropriate for the target audience? Is the technology used appropriate for this lesson?

The instructor's feedback to this step:

Good, this is well done.

Learners: one-to-one

Your final response:

3 learners from the target group will be selected. They will evaluate the learnability of the lesson as well as how "interesting" the lesson is. Attitude is important part of the process. If they think it is boring, their learning will be inhibited. They will evaluate the quality of instruction as well as how well the equipment works (technical accuracy) The target group is learners of various musical abilities from the same school and grade level. For example, one learner will be an exemplary student- one who makes honor groups- the other will be a "section" player and the the other will be a marginal- my parents are making me do this- student.

Your final response:

After revision is done based on expert feedback: 2 weeks prior to lesson implementation.

Your final response:

The students will fill out a survey and will be interviewed one-on-one. They will also be observed by the teacher in class. Survey- will tell us the attitude of the students, comprhension of the lesson- do they understand how to construct a scale based on the teacher's instruction and media used? It will also determine their prior knowledge of the subject- did they already have an idea of how a scale was constructed or was this the first time this was ever taught to them in any way shape or form. Interview: will also do an exit interview to get a personal feel for what they thought, their understanding of the topice and if they enjoyed the class. On both evaluations, they will also be asked: 1. was the instructor clear in his/her instructions? 2. did the technology- cd, powerpoint, keyboard- help you learn. 3. How different is this instruction from what you are used to?

The instructor's feedback to this step:

Good, this is well done.

Learners: small-group

Your final response:

Will consist of the same target group as one on one, only with 9 members. They will be looking at the same things- content and quality of teaching and technical accuracy.

Your final response:

Will occur 1 week prior to the fiel test.

Your final response:

Will be assessed in the same way as the one on one group. They will also have a pre-test and a post test to evaluate improvement. The pre-test will identify their musical skill level prior to the class- do they understand half and whole steps, basic music notation, etc. The post test will cover the same areas to see their level of improvement. The students will be told that they will not be getting a grade (to relieve the pressure of the test- attitudinal)

The instructor's feedback to this step:

Good, this is well done.

Learners: field trial

Your final response:

Will consist of 20 members of the target group. Will assess the same things as small group.

Your final response:

4 days prior to lesson implementation

Your final response:

Will focus on the same evaluation as the small group. The results should differ in that we have the entire target group represented vs small parts of that group. The instructors will also have f2f interaction to assess the attitude of the learners. Are the learners choosing to learn the instruction? Are they happy or going through the motions? Are they excited?

The instructor's feedback to this step:

Good, this is well done.
