Instructional Design Activity: Formative Evaluation

Overall Instructor Rating: Satisfactory

Ratings explanation:

  • Exemplary - A model answer in almost every way (this is given out very rarely).
  • Satisfactory - Very well done; you've met the expectations of the assignment. There are some minor problems, so read my feedback well.
  • Marginal Pass - You pass, but there are lots of issues to consider. Read my feedback very carefully and be sure you understand the points/issues I raise.
  • Not satisfactory, redo and resubmit - The assignment was not completed appropriately. I am concerned that you do not understand the process well enough yet. To get credit for the assignment, you need to redo it, most probably on another topic. Read and consider my feedback very carefully before redoing.

Instructor's Overall Feedback:

You did a good job here. You seem to understand the process very well.

The objective of this activity is to plan for the formative evaluation of your instruction. As stated by Dick, Carey, and Carey (2001): "Formative evaluation is the process designers use to obtain data that can be used to revise their instruction to make it more efficient and effective. The emphasis in formative evlauation is on the collection and analysis of data and the revision of the instruction" (p. 284-285).

Using the lesson you have described in the IDA on lesson design, complete the Formative Evaluation Planning Worksheet. Using the table below, describe:

  • Who will do the ongoing evaluation;
  • What is being evaluated;
  • When the evaluation should occur; and
  • How the evaluation will be conducted (i.e. tools you will use)

Be sure to refer to Dick, Carey, and Carey Chapter 10 for specific information that can be gathered from experts (e.g. subject-matter, learning, and learner) and learners in different formative evaluation situations (e.g. one-to-one, small-group, and field trials).

Formative Evaluation Planning Worksheet

Write the instructional objectives of your lesson here (it can be more than one):

Your final response:

Given 20 two-factor problems involving proper fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers with similar sign the student will be able to demonstrate accurate multiplication within 15 minutes.

The instructor's feedback to this step:

This has all the elements of a well written objective. Nice Job.

Write your objective using the correct form. Click here for advice on writing objectives.

HTML formatting reminder: You can embed HTML tags directly in your responses. This will be help your buddies and the instructor view your information in a more readable fashion. For example, if you want a paragraph break somewhere, just enter <p>:

I will have the experts review the lesson on three levels:
<p>
1. content; 2. technical accuracy; 3. quality of instruction.
<p>
The content review will help ensure that no mistakes were made in the information provided to the learners.

Experts (subject-matter, learning, learner)

Your final response:

A set of 7th and 8th grade math teachers have been chosen to server as one or more of the following:

1. Content Reviewer

2. Technical Accuracy Reviewer

3. Quality of Instruction Reviewer

The content reviewers will help ensure that no mistakes have been made in the content of the module.

The technical accuracy reviewers will ensure that the procedures of module are understandable and the various media is accessible.

The Quality of Instruction Reviewers will determine if the instruction is relevant, effective, and efficient.

Your final response:

Each expert will receive a copy of the instructional materials.

The experts will be given a description of their jobs.

Each expert will work individually on the module for one week.

Then the experts will come together with others in their review job to discuss what they have found.

Your final response:

All reviews will be conducted through the use of checklists, evaluations, interviews and discussion of and with the experts

One expert from each group will be needed for each follow-up interview

The instructor's feedback to this step:

Good, this is well done.

Learners: one-to-one

Your final response:

Four sample learners will be selected from the 7th grade gifted students who scored less than 80% on the benchmark assessment of the fraction topic.

Your final response:

The selection of learners is random. This evaluation will occur once lesson has been revised based upon the opinions of the experts. This should happen approximately 3 weeks after the completion of the original unit.

Your final response:

These learners will work with the instructor during the 30-minute team time rather than participating in their team’s remediation/enrichment activities. The students will complete a pre-test prior to instruction and a post-test after instruction.The learners will also rank the various media via a questionnaireThe learners will be interviewed and given a survey about the instruction once it is completed.

The instructor's feedback to this step:

Good, this is well done.

Learners: small-group

Your final response:

A small group (8 learners) of 7th grade gifted students who scored less than 80% on the fraction benchmark test will be picked for the small group. They will test the learning of the instruction.

Your final response:

The small group evaluation will occur once the lesson has undergone revision based up the input of the one to one learners. This should occur 3 weeks after the completion of the revision

Your final response:

The learners will participate in this module during the 30-minute team-time. The learners will take the same pretest and post-test and undergo the same one on one interview. The learners will also rank the various media via a questionnaire.

The instructor's feedback to this step:

Good, this is well done.

Learners: field trial

Your final response:

The remaining 17 7th grade gifted students who scored less than 80% on the fraction benchmark test will field test the module.

The 15 7th grade gifted students who scored 80% or greater will field-test the module as well. However, students scoring greater than 95% on the pretest will be exempt from the test.

Your final response:

The field tests will occur once the design of the instruction is completed.

Your final response:

The evaluation will take place during the 30-minute team time that is designated as remediation/enrichment time. The students will work on their individual teams and be observed by the instructor. They will complete a pre-test, post test and questionnaire.

The instructor's feedback to this step:

Good, this is well done.
