Instructional Design Activity: Formative Evaluation

Overall Instructor Rating: Satisfactory

Ratings explanation:

  • Exemplary - A model answer in almost every way (this is given out very rarely).
  • Satisfactory - Very well done; you've met the expectations of the assignment. There are some minor problems, so read my feedback well.
  • Marginal Pass - You pass, but there are lots of issues to consider. Read my feedback very carefully and be sure you understand the points/issues I raise.
  • Not satisfactory, redo and resubmit - The assignment was not completed appropriately. I am concerned that you do not understand the process well enough yet. To get credit for the assignment, you need to redo it, most probably on another topic. Read and consider my feedback very carefully before redoing.

Instructor's Overall Feedback:

You did a good job here. You seem to understand the process very well.

The objective of this activity is to plan for the formative evaluation of your instruction. As stated by Dick, Carey, and Carey (2001): "Formative evaluation is the process designers use to obtain data that can be used to revise their instruction to make it more efficient and effective. The emphasis in formative evlauation is on the collection and analysis of data and the revision of the instruction" (p. 284-285).

Using the lesson you have described in the IDA on lesson design, complete the Formative Evaluation Planning Worksheet. Using the table below, describe:

  • Who will do the ongoing evaluation;
  • What is being evaluated;
  • When the evaluation should occur; and
  • How the evaluation will be conducted (i.e. tools you will use)

Be sure to refer to Dick, Carey, and Carey Chapter 10 for specific information that can be gathered from experts (e.g. subject-matter, learning, and learner) and learners in different formative evaluation situations (e.g. one-to-one, small-group, and field trials).

Formative Evaluation Planning Worksheet

Write the instructional objectives of your lesson here (it can be more than one):

Your final response:

New media specialists will be able to generate a bibliography of instructional materials as a result of planning with a classroom teacher.

The instructor's feedback to this step:

This has all the elements of a well written objective. Nice Job.

Write your objective using the correct form. Click here for advice on writing objectives.

HTML formatting reminder: You can embed HTML tags directly in your responses. This will be help your buddies and the instructor view your information in a more readable fashion. For example, if you want a paragraph break somewhere, just enter <p>:

I will have the experts review the lesson on three levels:
<p>
1. content; 2. technical accuracy; 3. quality of instruction.
<p>
The content review will help ensure that no mistakes were made in the information provided to the learners.

Experts (subject-matter, learning, learner)

Your final response:

Experts will review the lesson on three levels:

1. content

2. technical accuracy

3. progression and quality of instruction

The content review will examine the accuracy of the steps provided and serve as a check for the information given on collaboration and teacher planning.

The technical review will test the step-by-steps given for formatting and printing bibliographies as well as testing any links we have provided for online resources.

The quality check will let me know if the lesson progresses in a logical and functional way i.e. is the learner supplied with the appropriate information at the right time?

Your final response:

Experts will be given the instructional materials prior to the first scheduled training session. Experts may review concurrently with one-on-one learners but should complete evaluation before small group evaluation.

Your final response:

Experts will be provided with a checklist for their evaluation of the materials with a comments section for each major point of evaluation. Individual interviews will be conducted at the completion of the review.

The instructor's feedback to this step:

Good, this is well done.

Learners: one-to-one

Your final response:

3 learners will be selected to try out the instruction and evaluate the clarity of the directions, the progression of the lesson, technical or content problems and overall effectiveness of the lesson. A newly out-of-school media specialist, a new-to-county but experienced media specialist, and a former teacher turned media specialist will be selected as our learners. These are the three "types" of learners we most often see in new media specialist training.

Your final response:

The lesson will be provided to the individual learners before scheduled training, concurrent with the experts' evaluation.

Your final response:

Designer will sit with each learner as they go through the training. As designer, but also supervisor to these new hires, there may be some tension which will be alleviated with the explanation that this is a test of the materials, not the learner. Designer will ask the learner to mark problems and to ask questions freely so that notes can be taken on key issues. At the end of the lesson, Designer will talk with each learner to get additional feedback.

The instructor's feedback to this step:

Good, this is well done.

Learners: small-group

Your final response:

A small group of 6 learners will be assembled representing the different learner levels as outlined in the one-on-one evaluation. The group will be asked to evaluate the presentation of concepts, the progression of the instructions and the clarity of the materials.

Your final response:

The small group review will be done after revision has been completed from the results of the expert and one-on-one evaluation.

Your final response:

Small group learners will be given a checklist as an assessment tool with the invitation to make comments on the checklist or on the instructional materials themselves. Interviews will be completed following the small group session.

The instructor's feedback to this step:

Good, this is well done.

Learners: field trial

Your final response:

The first session of new media specialist training will serve as the field test. These are actual learners with whom instructors meet regularly. Results from this field test would allow additional revision and the designer/instructor would have an opportunity to re-present or supplement instruction at a later date.

Your final response:

First new media specialist training session after instruction has been revised and considered complete.

Your final response:

These learners will be given an opportunity in survey format to respond to the instruction. Comments are encouraged. A post-instruction interview/discussion will held as well.

The instructor's feedback to this step:

Good, this is well done.
