Overall Instructor Rating: Satisfactory
Ratings explanation:
- Exemplary - A model answer in almost every way (this is given out very rarely).
- Satisfactory - Very well done; you've met the expectations of the assignment. There are some minor problems, so read my feedback well.
- Marginal Pass - You pass, but there are lots of issues to consider. Read my feedback very carefully and be sure you understand the points/issues I raise.
- Not satisfactory, redo and resubmit - The assignment was not completed appropriately. I am concerned that you do not understand the process well enough yet. To get credit for the assignment, you need to redo it, most probably on another topic. Read and consider my feedback very carefully before redoing.
Instructor's Overall Feedback:
Very well done! The only reason I did not give you a rating of "exemplary" is that I think you've "overshot the mark" in your lesson design -- I think there is way too much for one lesson.
The purpose of this activity is to design a specific lesson based on the lesson objectives identified in one of your unit instructional curriculum maps (ICMs). This IDA is designed to give you practice in planning lesson based on Gagne's events of instruction (see Dick, Carey, and Carey, chapter 8).
Complete the instructional strategy planning sheet below for one lesson of your choice. Preferably, this is a lesson that you identified during the unit design analysis. However, you can choose any lesson you wish. As outlined by Dick, Carey, and Carey, it may be helpful to organize the events of instruction in the following major groups or components: Pre-instructional activities, Content presentation, Learner participation, Assessment, Follow-through activities.
Your instructional plan should emphasize materials-centered instruction. That is, you should consider resources other than a live instructor for the delivery of the lesson. As you consider possible media, also consider the affordances, or special characteristics, that various media possess.
Instructional Strategy Planning Sheet
Write the instructional objectives of your lesson here (it can be more than one):
Your final response:
Course Title: Paint, Primers, and Paint Supplies
Unit 1: Paint - Types of Paint, Mixing Paint, and Labeling Paint Containers
Lesson 1: Types of Paint - Glossy and Flat
Lesson 1 Objective: Employees will be able to state the characteristics of flat paint and the characteristics of glossy paint. Employees will be able to state the uses of flat paint and the uses of glossy paint.
The instructor's feedback to this step:
Good objective. I noticed that in your first draft you waffled between "identify/state", but settled on "state" for the final objectives. "State" refers to verbal information objectives and it's unusual to have verbal information as the sole objectives for an entire lesson. So, I think you may want to consider having a "classify" objective here.
Enter your instructional plan for each of the instructional components. Also indicate your media choice for each instructional component.

Instructional Plan |
Media Choice |
1. Pre-instructional activities
- a. Motivating the learners/gaining their attention
- b. Informing the learners of the lesson objectives or purposes
- c. Informing the learner of what they already need to know to be successful in this lesson (i.e. prerequisite skills)
2. Content presentation
- a. Presenting the content to be learned (i.e. stimulus material)
- b. Guiding the learners as they are presented with the content
3. Learner participation
- a. Giving the learner opportunites for practice (i.e. eliciting the performance)
- b. Giving the learner feedback during practice
4. Assessment
- Tests and other assessments to see if anything has been learned as a result of this lesson
5. Follow-through activities
- a. Memory aids for retention
- b. Activities to help learners transfer their learning to other contexts

Your final response:
1. Pre-instructional activities
1a. Introduce and show video "The Paint Department - The Pride of Sherwin-Talbert"
1a. Discuss the mission statement of Sherwin-Talbert and the mission of the Paint Department.
1a. Discuss the mandate from senior management to re-train the entire staff of the Paint Department, including managers.
1a. Discuss the number of complaints received within the last three quarters, compared to the number of complaints received during the same three quarters last year.
1a. Discuss new complaint/customer service goals and some of the new procedures being put into place to accomplish these goals.
1b.Employees will be able to state the characteristics and uses of flat paint and the characteristics and uses of glossy paint.
1c. Discuss the need to have good listening, verbal, and written communcations skills to be successful in the Paint Department.
2. Content presentation
2a. Distribute the new training manual and training CD (containing practice exercises, games, self-paced quizzes, timed quizzes, and role-plays
<2a. Distribute new signon and password information to acess the Intranet.
<2a. Distribute samples of manufacturers' product literature on flat and glossy paints.
<2a. Distribute quick reference guides.
<2b. Present all of the content in the training manual, review all quick reference materials, and product literature on glossy and flat paint.
<2b. Show the new ST video: Flat or Glossy?
3. Learner participation
3.a Allow students to use the training CD to practice exercises, take self-paced quizzes, time-quizzes, play games, and participant in role-plays.
3a. Allow participants to get on new Intranet site to see new information pages, new product pages, and the daily inventory management page.
3b.Discuss the answers to the practice exercises, answers to quizzes, and give feedback on game scores.
3b. Give feedback on role-plays and allow the other class participants to provide feedback.
4. Assessment
4a. Have students complete post test.
5. Follow-through activities
5a. Remind students that all quick reference materials are theirs to keep and that they should continue reviewing quick reference materials to help with memory.
5a. Go back to the Paint Department and observe each student in actual interactions with customers.
5a. Monitor activities of the entire department for several hours.
5a. Have other employees observe/shadow each other for recommendations/feedback on skills and overall knowledge.
5b. Have employees do written assessments of their own strengths and weaknesses after training. Students should also include an assessment of the overall operations of the department after training.
The instructor's feedback to this step:
This is very well thought out. However, you really cannot accomplish all of this in just one lesson. Instead, I think you've designed several lessons here.

Your final response:
1. Pre-instructional activities
1a.Teacher, video, PowerPoint presentation
1b. Teacher, PowerPoint, Presentation
1c.Teacher, PowerPoint Presentation
2. Content presentation
2a. Training manual, training CD, quick reference guides, manufacturers' literature on flat and glossy paint, computer, video
3. Training manual, training CD, computer
4. Teacher
5. Training manual, teacher, computer, quick reference materials
The instructor's feedback to this step:
Good consideration of a wide range of appropriate media.
|
Provide a rationale for your media choices. How do the media you have selected support the instructional plan you have designed? Do the affordances of the media you've selected match the instructional strategy and support student learning?
Examples of media affordances:
- Video: dynamic representation of people, social situations, psychomotor tasks, etc.
- Computer simulation: dynamic representation of concepts and principles
- Computer spreadsheets: dynamic representation of numeric relationships
- Computer databases: dynamic representation of categorical relationships
Your final response:
The main source of media to be used in this training will be a training manual, PowerPoint presentations, the computer, videos, and a training CD that contains games, practice activities, self-paced quizzes, timed quizzes and role-plays. We will also use some manufacturers' product literature, quick reference guides, and the new ST Intranet site.
The training manual provides in-depth, detailed, and scientific information on glossy and flat paint. The PowerPoint presentations, videos, and training CD help us to deliver the training in an interesting way, more effective way. We believe that assorted media allows us to keep the students engaged and focused on learning.
The practice activities, quizzes, and role-plays allow us to test the students' understanding of the material we deliver.
Returning to the Paint Department and observing the employees on the job, and asking the employess to observe, assist, and evaluate each other, further tests their knowledge and commitment to helping ST reach its customer service goals.
The instructor's feedback to step 4:
Well stated rationales.
