Instructional Design Activity: Lesson Design

Overall Instructor Rating: Satisfactory

Ratings explanation:

  • Exemplary - A model answer in almost every way (this is given out very rarely).
  • Satisfactory - Very well done; you've met the expectations of the assignment. There are some minor problems, so read my feedback well.
  • Marginal Pass - You pass, but there are lots of issues to consider. Read my feedback very carefully and be sure you understand the points/issues I raise.
  • Not satisfactory, redo and resubmit - The assignment was not completed appropriately. I am concerned that you do not understand the process well enough yet. To get credit for the assignment, you need to redo it, most probably on another topic. Read and consider my feedback very carefully before redoing.

Instructor's Overall Feedback:

Hi, Consuelo You did a great job on this IDA. I do not have suggestions for major revision. Here is feedback on your work. 1) You listed video material for your lesson design. I agree that it will be great material for your content presentation. However, I was not sure where and why you need video for your pre-instructional activities and learner participation parts. If you think that it is still needed for those parts, you need to make a connection between your descriptions of activities and your choice of media. 2) In your assessment, I think you need to include paper quiz material for your media choice. You only have a teacher there. Also, as you did in the performance test, you need criteria (e.g., with 100% accuracy) in your paper quiz. 3) In follow-through activities, I don’t see any reason that you need 2bs. I think those can be combined as one activity. I hope that my feedback helps you when you work on your next IDA and ongoing group project. Please feel free to ask questions if you have any. Thanks! Eun Jung

The purpose of this activity is to design a specific lesson based on the lesson objectives identified in one of your unit instructional curriculum maps (ICMs). This IDA is designed to give you practice in planning lesson based on Gagne's events of instruction (see Dick, Carey, and Carey, chapter 8).

Complete the instructional strategy planning sheet below for one lesson of your choice. Preferably, this is a lesson that you identified during the unit design analysis. However, you can choose any lesson you wish. As outlined by Dick, Carey, and Carey, it may be helpful to organize the events of instruction in the following major groups or components: Pre-instructional activities, Content presentation, Learner participation, Assessment, Follow-through activities.

Your instructional plan should emphasize materials-centered instruction. That is, you should consider resources other than a live instructor for the delivery of the lesson. As you consider possible media, also consider the affordances, or special characteristics, that various media possess.

Instructional Strategy Planning Sheet

Write the instructional objectives of your lesson here (it can be more than one):

Your final response:

Following an initial presentation by the instructor participants will be able to safely demonstrate the proper procedures required to use a lift arm support when servicing a skid steer loader with 100% accuracy.

Enter your instructional plan for each of the instructional components. Also indicate your media choice for each instructional component.

Instructional Component
Instructional Plan
Media Choice

1. Pre-instructional activities

  • a. Motivating the learners/gaining their attention
  • b. Informing the learners of the lesson objectives or purposes
  • c. Informing the learner of what they already need to know to be successful in this lesson (i.e. prerequisite skills)

2. Content presentation

  • a. Presenting the content to be learned (i.e. stimulus material)
  • b. Guiding the learners as they are presented with the content

3. Learner participation

  • a. Giving the learner opportunites for practice (i.e. eliciting the performance)
  • b. Giving the learner feedback during practice

4. Assessment

  • Tests and other assessments to see if anything has been learned as a result of this lesson

5. Follow-through activities

  • a. Memory aids for retention
  • b. Activities to help learners transfer their learning to other contexts

Your final response:

1. Pre-instructional activities a. Motivate learners: Discuss with participants the relevance of being able to safely service a skid steer loader, If they work under the lift arms without an approved lift arm support it could result in a serious injury or death. b. Describe objective: Inform participants that they are expected to correctly engage a lift arm support prior to service with 100% accuracy. c. Entry behavior: Inform participants that they will need to know the steps for engaging the lift arm support prior to this lesson. 2. Content Presentation a 1. Distribute a worksheet that identifies the steps required to engage the lift arm support. a 2. Show a video that will demonstrate the proper procedure in a step by step sequence for engaging lift arm support b. The teacher will Physically Demonstrate to the participants the step by step procedures for engaging the lift arm support. Each step will be accompanied with an explanation. The participants will be encouraged to ask questions along the way. The participants will be asked to highlight each step in the course handbook after the teacher demonstration so that they may use it as a reference/study guide. 3. Learner Participation a & b. Participants will each demonstrate the steps required to engage the lift arm support with assistance from teacher. If the teacher finds that one or more of the steps have not been correctly followed, the teacher will repeat the steps then the participant should go back and redo the procedure while orally stating the steps. 4. Assessment Assessment will mainly come in the form of teacher observation, and amount of effort of participation. Paper Quiz: Ask participants to write the steps in order that are needed for safely engaging the lift arm support. Performance Test: Participants will execute the proper procedures for engaging the lift arm support without out teacher assistance and with 100% accuracy. 5. Follow-through activities. a. Participants will keep their course handbooks for a reference and guide. b. Participants will participate in a review/discussion session with the teacher and each other. b. Participants will discuss types of accidents that can occur when not using proper safety procedures.

Provide a rationale for your media choices. How do the media you have selected support the instructional plan you have designed? Do the affordances of the media you've selected match the instructional strategy and support student learning?

Examples of media affordances:

  • Video: dynamic representation of people, social situations, psychomotor tasks, etc.
  • Computer simulation: dynamic representation of concepts and principles
  • Computer spreadsheets: dynamic representation of numeric relationships
  • Computer databases: dynamic representation of categorical relationships

Your final response:

Course handbook: Provides an excellent summary of material and key points presented in the video. Video:Dynamic representation of psycho motor tasks The Worksheet is an example of printed media. It lists the activities to be discussed/carried out that day. It is useful in helping to keep students "on track" and engaged in current activities. Teacher demonstration provides a visual and physical presentation of the steps required for engaging the lift arm support. It also provides oral instruction. The teacher tells them what they are going to do, asks them to repeat what they are going to do and shows them what they are going to do.
