Instructional Design Activity: Lesson Design

Overall Instructor Rating: Satisfactory

Ratings explanation:

  • Exemplary - A model answer in almost every way (this is given out very rarely).
  • Satisfactory - Very well done; you've met the expectations of the assignment. There are some minor problems, so read my feedback well.
  • Marginal Pass - You pass, but there are lots of issues to consider. Read my feedback very carefully and be sure you understand the points/issues I raise.
  • Not satisfactory, redo and resubmit - The assignment was not completed appropriately. I am concerned that you do not understand the process well enough yet. To get credit for the assignment, you need to redo it, most probably on another topic. Read and consider my feedback very carefully before redoing.

Instructor's Overall Feedback:

Nikhat, I think you have done an excellent job on this IDA and seem to have a good grasp on the process. I would like to see in step 1 some motivation or explanation as to why students need to learn this skill. I just think that it is important that students realize the importance of the things that they learn - especially at this age (high school, right). I think you have done a good job at keeping this lesson basic - I assume that learning how to balance a checkbook is another lesson, but certainly they would need to know how to write a check first. Often, people want to lump several lessons into one lesson and that makes things complicated quickly! You provide excellent rationale for the media you use and did a good job making this an interactive lesson for the students. I love your use of the computer/Internet for this lesson! Lindsay

The purpose of this activity is to design a specific lesson based on the lesson objectives identified in one of your unit instructional curriculum maps (ICMs). This IDA is designed to give you practice in planning lesson based on Gagne's events of instruction (see Dick, Carey, and Carey, chapter 8).

Complete the instructional strategy planning sheet below for one lesson of your choice. Preferably, this is a lesson that you identified during the unit design analysis. However, you can choose any lesson you wish. As outlined by Dick, Carey, and Carey, it may be helpful to organize the events of instruction in the following major groups or components: Pre-instructional activities, Content presentation, Learner participation, Assessment, Follow-through activities.

Your instructional plan should emphasize materials-centered instruction. That is, you should consider resources other than a live instructor for the delivery of the lesson. As you consider possible media, also consider the affordances, or special characteristics, that various media possess.

Instructional Strategy Planning Sheet

Write the instructional objectives of your lesson here (it can be more than one):

Your final response:

Obj1: Given the mock check,SWBAT generate(write) the check accurately.

Enter your instructional plan for each of the instructional components. Also indicate your media choice for each instructional component.

Instructional Component
Instructional Plan
Media Choice

1. Pre-instructional activities

  • a. Motivating the learners/gaining their attention
  • b. Informing the learners of the lesson objectives or purposes
  • c. Informing the learner of what they already need to know to be successful in this lesson (i.e. prerequisite skills)

2. Content presentation

  • a. Presenting the content to be learned (i.e. stimulus material)
  • b. Guiding the learners as they are presented with the content

3. Learner participation

  • a. Giving the learner opportunites for practice (i.e. eliciting the performance)
  • b. Giving the learner feedback during practice

4. Assessment

  • Tests and other assessments to see if anything has been learned as a result of this lesson

5. Follow-through activities

  • a. Memory aids for retention
  • b. Activities to help learners transfer their learning to other contexts

Your final response:

Pre-instructional activities: 1a. As students enter the clasroom, instructor will give out a blank mock check to each student. 1b. After all the students have entered the classroom, instructor will describe the goal to the students explaining that they will learn to fill out the check accurately. 1c. Instructor will explain to the students that they are expected to follow the directions and understand them. Students will work in a group of two. Content Presentation. 2a. Using Powerpoint presentation, instructor will show to the class how to write the check step by step, discussing each part of the check 2b.guiding the students to fill out the given mock check. Learner Participation. 3a. During presentation, students will asked to work in a group of two and each student will write a mock check to his/her partner as a "birthday" gift. 3a. In the computer lab, students will log on to the website http://www.moneyinstructor.com/in/inwritecheck.asp and practice learning to write the check interactively. 3b. Instructor will assess the students by observing them and through check writing activity in the classroom. Assessment: 4a. Students will complete the teacher created interactive activity on "writing check" on the computer by filling out check interactively. Based on the students performance on interactive activity, instructor will provide the feedback to the students. Follow-through actitivities: 5a. Instructor will provide a worksheet activity where the real scenarios will be presented to the students and they are asked to fill out the check provided in the worksheet. 5b. By presenting the real-life scenarios students will be able to learn to write checks with accuracy.

Provide a rationale for your media choices. How do the media you have selected support the instructional plan you have designed? Do the affordances of the media you've selected match the instructional strategy and support student learning?

Examples of media affordances:

  • Video: dynamic representation of people, social situations, psychomotor tasks, etc.
  • Computer simulation: dynamic representation of concepts and principles
  • Computer spreadsheets: dynamic representation of numeric relationships
  • Computer databases: dynamic representation of categorical relationships

Your final response:

Rationale: Using Powerpoint presentation, the instructor will be able to demonstrate the check writing activity clearly by showing one step on slide at one time. This will allow the students to understand and learn better. The overhead projecter will help to display the PPT slides so that students can follow the steps clearly. Using web resources students will be able to gain a hands-on practice by interacting with the computer. This will also allow for the visual learners and the independent learners to learn effectively.
