The purpose of this activity is to design a specific lesson based on the lesson objectives identified in one of your unit instructional curriculum maps (ICMs). This IDA is designed to give you practice in planning lesson based on Gagne's events of instruction (see Dick, Carey, and Carey, chapter 8).

Complete the instructional strategy planning sheet below for one lesson of your choice. Preferably, this is a lesson that you identified during the unit design analysis. However, you can choose any lesson you wish. As outlined by Dick, Carey, and Carey, it may be helpful to organize the events of instruction in the following major groups or components: Pre-instructional activities, Content presentation, Learner participation, Assessment, Follow-through activities.

Your instructional plan should emphasize materials-centered instruction. That is, you should consider resources other than a live instructor for the delivery of the lesson. As you consider possible media, also consider the affordances, or special characteristics, that various media possess.

a. Discuss how data received from personality styles, communication styles, skills, and interests assessments will assist in identifying a career, thus allowing the student to make a more informed decision when selecting a place of employment.

b. Describe that the goal of the lesson is to research companies that offer positions for their identified careers. Explain that the information gathered will be used to construct a comparison chart of two companies.

c. Explain that experience using a word processor and web browser are expected.

2. Content presentation

a & b. Distribute the handouts that contain instructions for conducting the research and guidelines for creating the comparison chart. Explain that everyone will need to select two companies for the assignment. Provide an explanation of the comparison items to research. Have students refer to the lesson handout.

3. Learner participation

a & b Have students login to their workstations. Tell students to follow the instructions as given in the handout. Assist students as necessary in gathering research data.

4. Assessment

Ask the student to construct the comparison chart after gathering information. Next have the student write a summary of the information gathered without referring to the data.

5. Follow-through activities

a. Let the students keep their comparison chart by saving to a disk.

b. Assign an out-of-class activity in which the student must gather information for two additional companies. They will then add this information to the existing comparison chart.

Your final response:

The instructional media used in this lesson consists of lesson handouts which guide the learner, step by step, through the process of gathering research data for company comparisons. By providing the learner with an itemized list, the learner will be able to efficiently conduct the research process. The lesson handouts are in paper form for future student reference. This will also benefit the student by having a reference for conducting future research on companies. Additionally, the utilization of the internet will allow the student the opportunity to gather data about companies in any area of the world. This information will increase the student's awareness of the numerous employment opportunities available for their chosen field of interest.
