The Subway sandwich store in Athens, GA, requires its new employees to complete training in customer service interaction and sandwich preparation as a preliminary part of their job. The training period normally occurs over the course of 3 days in which the new employee acts as a shadow to a veteran employee, but depending on learner needs, training may exceed 3 days. The typical demographic of Subway employees at this particular store represents a wide range of ages, ethnic backgrounds, educational backgrounds and genders. The anticipated normative problem, here, is that due to the varying educational backgrounds (cognitive ability) and ethnic backgrounds (language ability), certain activities or concepts may be more difficult to grasp than others, which will lengthen the training period for some individuals. Are there ways to overcome these instructional difficulties and maintain a 3-day training period for all new employees?
