Instructional Design Activity: Needs Analysis
Overall Instructor Rating: Satisfactory Ratings explanation:
Instructor's Overall Feedback: Hi Consuelo: Your Needs Assessment is much improved. Your survey and instructional goals are much more specific and focus on things that can be addressed with instruction. Dr. Law. Hi Consuelo: Nice work on your Needs Assessment. You arrived at some very important instructional goals that should address the problems identified. Please make the updates and resubmit it for my feedback again. Here are a few things I have questions about: You wrote, "Due to the fact that 90%of the accidents are caused by carelessness it is evident that service individuals need proper training in safe maintenace procedures." If the cause is carelessness, does that mean in operating the equipment, or in maintenance? You stated maintenance but I'm having trouble making the connection, unless the equipment is breaking down during operation and causing accidents. You wrote, "The equipment industry does not adequatley prepare skid steer loader service technicians to safely operate, maintain or service skid steer loaders." This sounds very clear to me and includes both maintenance and operation. Your survey could be clearer as to how you arrived at both of these conclusions. Instructional Goals: See my suggestions in parentheses You wrote, 1.The students will understand (identify the reasons why) the importance of reading and following instructions provided by the machines safety signs, instructional machine signs, service manual and operations and maintenance manual. 2. Have the (cut out "Have the" - don't need; Students will be able to identify . . . )students properly identify the loaders components and safety features. 3. Understand (Identify) when and how to use lift support arms and jack stands. 4. Understand (Students will be able to perform . . .) proper hydaulic system maintenance and service procedures and consequences of not following them. Typos: hascompalined larege
1. Preliminary: Describe the context within which this potential instructional problem takes place. This will pinpoint where the problem is located. If instruction is deemed necessary, this will be the place where it will be designed and implemented. a. List the context, also known as the "system of interest". Your final response: Skid Steer Loader Service Safety Training Course b. Describe or show how the context relates to the bigger environment. Show how this context relates to other levels of the system within which it works. Your final response: The Skid Steer Learning Training Course is offered within the Department of Economic Development at Dekalb Technical College, which is part of the Georgia Department of Technical Adult Education comprising 34 technical colleges. The resources provided are loader specific operations and service manuals, loader specific service manuals, safety video on practies and procedures and hands on acctivities with a skid steer loader with bucket. There will be one instructor and participants with interest safety service training in construction industry, equipment manufacturing companies, service industry and higher education. The instructor's feedback to step 1: No specific feedback given on this step. 2. Symptoms of a problem. Write a brief description of some symptoms that make you stop and wonder if something is wrong. Your final response: The number of safety related accidents have increased the cost workmans compensation insurance plans. Service technicians lack the knowledge of proper safety procedures needed to safely service a skid steer loader. According to reports 90% of service related accidents are due to carelessness or human error. The equipment service industry hascompalined that individuals are unable to receive this type of training outside of a company prior to being hired. Another problem is that small companies do not have skilled and properly trained safety directors to provide in-house training. Using the evidence cited above, describe why you believe that these symptoms signal a problem. Keeping these questions in mind, describe the reasons for identifying these symptoms as problematic. Your final response: Due to the fact that 90%of the accidents are caused by carelessness it is evident that service individuals need proper training in safe maintenace procedures. In addition the accidents causing injury to individuals and property are charged against the company's workmans compensation insurance creating a larege loss in profits due to the expense. The instructor's feedback to step 2: No specific feedback given on this step. 3. Preliminary Problem Statement. Based on 1 and 2, write a preliminary draft problem statement. Your context should be the subject of the statement. This is just the initial pass -- the statement will be revised in subsequent steps. Your final response: The equipment service industry does not have the means or expertise to train safe skilled service technicians. The instructor's feedback to step 3: No specific feedback given on this step. 4. Verify the problem and determine specific needs. Two things will now happen concurrently. First, you need a systematic procedure to identify and collect data in order to verify that a problem exists. Second, you must identify information that the data sources may help uncover.
*Note: You are not required to gather data; you can draw on your experience or imagination to list the data you might gather. The instructor's feedback to step 4: No specific feedback given on this step. 5. Prioritize your list of needs.Which are most important? Why are they most important?
The instructor's feedback to step 5: No specific feedback given on this step. 6. Rewrite your problem statement. Take a moment to look carefully at the initial problem statement that you wrote. Revisit your prioritized needs and check if your problem statement is still accurate and appropriate.
Rewrite the problem statement here: Your final response: The equipment industry does not adequatley prepare skid steer loader service technicians to safely operate, maintain or service skid steer loaders. The instructor's feedback to step 6: No specific feedback given on this step. 7. Identify the instructional goals. The last step in Needs Assessment is to list a few goals of instruction. Remember, not all goals can be solved through instruction. The instructional goals you identify will be the starting information for the next steps in the instructional design process. List the instructional goals in order of priority.
The instructor's feedback to step 7: No specific feedback given on this step. |
