Overall Instructor Rating: Satisfactory
Ratings explanation:
- Exemplary - A model answer in almost every way (this is given out very rarely).
- Satisfactory - Very well done; you've met the expectations of the assignment. There are some minor problems, so read my feedback well.
- Marginal Pass - You pass, but there are lots of issues to consider. Read my feedback very carefully and be sure you understand the points/issues I raise.
- Not satisfactory, redo and resubmit - The assignment was not completed appropriately. I am concerned that you do not understand the process well enough yet. To get credit for the assignment, you need to redo it, most probably on another topic. Read and consider my feedback very carefully before redoing.
Instructor's Overall Feedback:
Hi Anita:
You did a great job in re-writing your instructional goals to make specific and measureable. It is much clearer how you will solve the problem identified with instruction.
Dr. Law.
Hi, Anita
Your topic is very interesting.
It is great that you have a solid understanding of your context and bringing benefits to the community by meeting the needs of your target audience.
Overall, you described problems and needs very well.
However, I noticed that your final problem statement could be more elaborated on from the first problem statement based upon your data collected from five different resources.
Also, your final goal statements are closer to what they will do during the class (contents/activities) rather than what they will be able to do as a result of this program.
Please think about what learners will be able to do after this class and restate those goals more concisely. Please resubmit this assignment once you have updated these 2 sections and I will review it again.
Hope this helps!
Thank you!
Eun Jung
1. Preliminary: Describe the context within which this potential instructional problem takes place. This will pinpoint where the problem is located. If instruction is deemed necessary, this will be the place where it will be designed and implemented.
a. List the context, also known as the "system of interest".
Your final response:
Lakeville Public Library Senior Citizens Outreach Department
b. Describe or show how the context relates to the bigger environment. Show how this context relates to other levels of the system within which it works.
Your final response:
The Lakeville Public Library is the only public library in Lakeville, Massachusetts. Lakeville is predominately a retirement community. The Library operates under the umbrella of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC), which supervises all the public libraries in Massachusetts. The Library responsibilities fall under the state charter, which include providing access to educational opportunities (small scale-through community programs) and instructional/leisure reading materials.
The Lakeville Library renovation program, funded by the MBLC, was completed in April 2006. The renovations included 4 classrooms with seating for 10 people in each classroom. The Melinda and Bill Gates Foundation provided each classroom with computer-mediated tools on each desk and an instructor’s computer workstation. Through a grant, the Library has secured a T1 line and free Internet access. The Library is ADA (American Disabilities Act) compliant.
The Library’s Senior Citizens Outreach Department has a pool of teaching professionals that have voluntarily taught "Introduction to Computers" classes and have expressed an interest to teach more advanced classes. The Library is closely affiliated with Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Alumni Association, Microsoft, Massachusetts Board of Directors Outreach Department (MBDOD) and the Lakeville Community Senior Citizens Center. The local senior citizens center and several local retirement facilities provide transportation to and from the Lakeville Public Library on a weekly basis.

2. Symptoms of a problem. Write a brief description of some symptoms that make you stop and wonder if something is wrong.
Your final response:
According a survey of the Library's Senior Citizens Outreach Department's participants have requested a web design course.
Participants of the Outreach Department have stated that they are intimidated by web page authoring software.
80% of the library's patrons are unable to design a web page. Comments from recent "Introduction to Computers" classes indicated that many Senior Citizens feel intimidated by web page authoring programs and are often too afraid to start the web design process with out assistance. Their statements confirmed that many of the older library patrons do not understand the web page design process, and how to publish a web page. Over 50% of the Senior citizens that have attended the Library's recent computer classes, 100 out of a total of 200 students, have requested an on-site web page design course.
Using the evidence cited above, describe why you believe that these symptoms signal a problem. Keeping these questions in mind, describe the reasons for identifying these symptoms as problematic.
Your final response:
Request for a web page course: (Error) The majority of the Library's patronage are Senior Citizens. They are the core tax base that supports the Library. The Lakeville Public Library is commissioned to provide services to its citizens.
Unable to design a web page (Evidence) Over 80% of the library's patrons, that participate in the Library's Senior Citizens Outreach Programs, have indicated that they are unable to design a web page and 50% of the patrons that have taken an "Introduction to Computers" course at the Library have requested that a basic web page design course be offered at the Library.
Intimidated by web page authoring software: (Observation) Patrons have indicated that they are afraid of the software that they have seen other people are using.
The instructor's feedback to step 2:
No specific feedback given on this step.
3. Preliminary Problem Statement. Based on 1 and 2, write a preliminary draft problem statement. Your context should be the subject of the statement. This is just the initial pass -- the statement will be revised in subsequent steps.
Your final response:
The Lakeville Public Library Citizens Outreach Department is not meeting the needs of Lakeville's Senior citizens by not providing a requested on-site basic web page design course that will help them learn about web page design and how to publish a web page.
The instructor's feedback to step 3:
No specific feedback given on this step.
4. Verify the problem and determine specific needs. Two things will now happen concurrently. First, you need a systematic procedure to identify and collect data in order to verify that a problem exists. Second, you must identify information that the data sources may help uncover.
Data sources (who, what) |
Information gathered |
What did you find? (Needs)* |
Example: Interview participants in course; administer class survey; administer test of understanding.
|
Example: Participant opinions on IDAs and course; Participant score on test. |
Example: Participants believe there is too much jargon (felt need); Participants don't understand ID vocabulary as compared to other classes (comparative need); Participants don't score above national average (comparative need); Participants don't/couldn't see the relation between their work and the ID process) |
| Your final response:
a. Class surveys(self-evaluation survey)
b. Patron Surveys (self-evaluation survey)
c. Course Suggestion Box
d. Observation during "Introduction to Computers" classes
e. Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) - Services Survey
|
Your final response:
a. Students of the "Introduction to Computers " course filled out a survey that collected data on the student's knowledge and comfort level in designing a web page. The data indicated that the student knowledge about web page design did not exist or was very low.
b. Patrons that participate in the Library's Senior Citizens Outreach Programs completed a survey that collected data on their ability to design a web page. The results demonstrated that 80% do not know how to design a web page.
c. The Library's suggestion box collects information regarding patrons’ requests regarding proposed library services. The request for a "Basic Web Page design" is often submitted.
c. The "Introduction to Computers" instructors have indicated that many of their students did not understand terminology such as: naviagation bar, link or web page address.
c. The "Introduction to Computers" instructors indicated that after their students complete their courses over 50% stated they are interested in more advanced classes such as a web design course. That is, 100 students out of a total of 200 students have requested a on-site web design course.
d. The MBLC conducts a yearly survey of Library Directors in Massachusetts. Data that is gathered indicates that 40 of the 60 libraries located in retirement communities have received requests for a "Basic Web Page Design Course."
d. The data from the MBLC survey indicates that 10 of the 60 public libraries located in retirement communities are teaching basic web design courses. The Lakeville Public library is not one of the libraries that provides the web design courses.
|
Your final response:
1. Participants of the Library's Senior Citizen Outreach Program find web page authoring software intimidating and therefore do not know how to design a web page. Library Patrons do not know how to access to web page design software that is easy to use.(Felt)
2. Participants of the Library's Senior Citizen Outreach Program do not understand web page terminology and therefore do not know how to communicate with web page designers/instructors or cannot learn it on their own. (Normative)
3. Participants of the Library's Senior Citizen Outreach Program have requested a "Basic Web Page Design" course and the requested course has not been provided. (Expressed)
4. As more senior citizens are signing up for the computer courses offered at the library it is anticipated that more of them will request a web page design course. No plans have been made to prepare for the anticipated need for the course.(Anticipated/Future)
5. The MBLC has suggested that the libraries that are located in retirement communities provide a "Basic Web Page Design Course." The suggested course of action has not been acted on. (Felt)
6. Ten of the sixty public libraries located in retirement communities are offering "Basic Web Page Design" Courses. The Lakeville Public Library does not provide a "Basic Web Page Design" course. (Comparative)
|
*Note: You are not required to gather data; you can draw on your experience or imagination to list the data you might gather.
The instructor's feedback to step 4:
No specific feedback given on this step.
5. Prioritize your list of needs.Which are most important? Why are they most important?
Prioritized needs |

The instructor's feedback to step 5:
No specific feedback given on this step.
6. Rewrite your problem statement. Take a moment to look carefully at the initial problem statement that you wrote. Revisit your prioritized needs and check if your problem statement is still accurate and appropriate.
Rewrite the problem statement here:
Your final response:
The Lakeville Public Library Senior Citizens Outreach Department is not meeting the needs of Lakeville's Senior citizens by not providing the requested on-site basic web page design course that will help them learn about web page design and how to publish a web page.
The instructor's feedback to step 6:
No specific feedback given on this step.
7. Identify the instructional goals. The last step in Needs Assessment is to list a few goals of instruction. Remember, not all goals can be solved through instruction. The instructional goals you identify will be the starting information for the next steps in the instructional design process. List the instructional goals in order of priority.
Instructional goals by priority |
Reasons for importance |
Your final response:
1. Library Patrons understand structure and functionality of a web page by obtaining background on what a web page looks like and how it works. They will examine a existing web page and learn web page terminology.
2. Library Patrons will learn how to secure a Google account, select a web page template, design a web page, link it to another web page, create a link to an email address, create a link to a word document, embed an image into their web page, and publish their web page.
3. Library Patrons will learn how to use Google Page Creator.
|
Your final response:
Goal 1. - Learn terminology, establish a introductory background on web page structure and functionality - Reason: Background knowledge on how a web page works and developing a common language is essential for the instruction to be successful.
Goal 2.- Learn how to get a Google account, select a web page template, create the first page in their website, link it to another web page, link it to an email address and word document. They will also learn how to embed an image into their web page. Reason - these are basic skills necessary to develop a web page.
Goal 3. Library Patrons will learn how to use Google's Page Creator. Reason: Google's Page Creator is more intuitive and is less intimidating than other robust programs like DreamWeaver. This will be a side benefit to the learning process and not the focus of the program.
